DDA Forensics recently exhibited at the 13th annual “Eye of the Storm” event at the Museum of Discovery & Science (MODS) in Fort Lauderdale on May 31. The interactive expo, hosted in collaboration with Florida International University’s International Hurricane Research Center, the FIU Extreme Events Institute, and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), focuses on hurricane preparedness and education for South Florida residents, families, and children.

Executive Director Kevin Guthrie of FDEM, Major General John D. Haas of the Florida National Guard, and Erik Salna, Associate Director of Education and Outreach at FIU’s Extreme Events Institute and International Hurricane Research Center, led the call to action, urging all Floridians to complete their preparations ahead of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which officially begins June 1.

“This event is about empowering residents, especially families, with the knowledge and tools they need to be prepared for hurricane season. It’s been a long, long time since a system has hit this area of Florida. We feel like there’s some complacency. It’s been 20 years. Hurricane Wilma was the last storm to hit this area. Now’s the time to get ready. It’s also about getting your families and your kids involved. We believe that education is one of the strongest forms of preparedness,” says Guthrie.

“Eye of the Storm” featured hands-on activities, live science demonstrations, and presentations from hurricane experts, including NOAA Hurricane Hunters and local meteorologists. Attendees also explored exhibits on wind engineering and emergency management, aiming to equip families with the knowledge and tools needed for the upcoming hurricane season.

To keep things fun and engaging, the DDA Forensics team hosted a coloring contest featuring caricatures of our Managing Partners, Jonathon Diego and Brian Peterson, along with our Director of Engineering, Dr. Ziad Azzi. It was a hit with the kids, and some of the adults too! We also handed out free first aid kits, goodies, and swag to help promote storm readiness.

“It was a great opportunity to connect with the community, answer questions about storm damage and forensic engineering, and support an event that brings awareness to safety and preparedness. Thanks to everyone who stopped by!” says Jamey Bennett, Director of Business Development, DDA Forensics.

As a Weather-Ready Nation (WRN) Ambassador, DDA Forensics proudly supports NOAA’s initiative to improve the nation’s readiness, responsiveness, and overall resilience against extreme weather events. Through education, collaboration, and community outreach, DDA is committed to advancing storm and hurricane preparedness and empowering individuals with the knowledge needed to stay safe before, during, and after disasters.

“Whether presenting at industry events, mentoring students, or participating in public safety initiatives, our goal is to share knowledge that helps build safer, more resilient communities,” says Jonathon Diego, Managing Partner, DDA Forensics.

While peak hurricane activity is expected in September, the season runs June 1 through November 30. Storms can form at any time, so preparation, early planning, and ongoing awareness are critical. Download the Florida Hurricane Guide for essential safety tips.
