Renowned Expert in Wind Damage Assessment and Structural Analysis Joins Leading Forensic Engineering Firm
MIAMI — DDA Forensics is thrilled to announce the addition of Manuel Matus, PhD, to our team as a Civil and Structural Engineer. Dr. Matus brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the field of civil engineering, specializing in wind damage assessment and building code development. His extensive experience and dedication to advancing engineering practices make him an invaluable asset to our organization and our clients.
In his role at DDA Forensics, Matus will specialize in conducting thorough investigations of structural damages, product failures, and other incidents. He meticulously collects and analyzes data through site inspections, material samples, and design specifications to reconstruct events leading to structural failures. Utilizing engineering principles and advanced simulation techniques, Matus determines the root cause of failures, assessing factors such as human error, design flaws, and manufacturing defects.
“Dr. Matus brings a unique blend of technical skill and innovative thinking to DDA Forensics. His experience in investigating structural damages and his contributions to building code development are invaluable assets that will help us lead the industry in forensic engineering solutions. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to seeing the positive impact of his work on our projects and the communities we serve,” says Brian Peterson, co-founder, DDA Forensics.
One of his significant achievements includes his contribution to the ASCE 7 code through his research on “Wind-Induced Loads on Canopies Attached to Mid-rise Buildings,” which was cited by the ASCE 7-22. His work emphasizes the importance of codifying experimental results to enhance building codes and ensure public safety.
Passionate about education and research, Matus is currently an Adjunct Professor at Florida International University (FIU), where he teaches undergraduate-level courses, such as Hurricane Engineering and Global Sustainability. He has been actively involved in research for over eight years, beginning as an undergraduate research assistant at FIU. Matus has been a researcher at the Wall of Wind (WOW) ) Experimental Facility for nearly three years, under the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program. His research focuses on investigating wind-induced loads on structures, with a particular emphasis on low-rise irregularly shaped buildings.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Matus to our team at DDA Forensics. His expertise in structural analysis and wind damage assessments, coupled with his dedication to advancing engineering practices, aligns perfectly with our commitment to delivering the highest quality forensic investigations. His impressive academic and research background will undoubtedly enhance our capabilities and contribute to our client success,” says Jonathon Diego, co-founder, DDA Forensics.
With a PhD in civil engineering, Matus specializes in hurricane engineering and the effects of extreme winds on civil infrastructure. He earned the prestigious Florida International University Service Excellence Award for his research work. Additionally, Matus holds a master’s degree in civil engineering, with his thesis titled “Experimental Investigation of Wind-Induced Response of Span-wire Traffic Signal Systems,” which garnered him the Dwight Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship. Matus also holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, with a major in structural engineering. His comprehensive academic background has equipped him with a solid foundation in structural analysis and engineering principles, underpinning his professional achievements.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Matus is passionate about mentoring the next generation of engineers. He has been actively involved in the NHERI Design Safe program, mentoring undergraduate students in natural hazards engineering and inspiring them to pursue careers in this vital field. With his technical expertise and dedication to improving infrastructure resilience, Matus is committed to making a lasting impact in civil engineering and contributing to safer, more sustainable communities.
