DDA Forensics Principal Civil and Structural Engineer, Siva Munuswamy, presented at the annual American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Florida Section Conference in Orlando. The event took place at the JW Marriott Grand Lakes Resort on July 14-15. The conference aims to foster an exchange of ideas, enhance teaching methods and curricula, and provide exceptional networking opportunities for engineering professionals.

Siva’s presentation, “‘Legal v Engineering Perspective of Roof and Roof Sections”, featured key details on the legal definition of roof section and the engineering definition as defined in the code; the consequences of those two definitions on roof assessment for damages; and repair of single-family residences, townhouses, and condominiums. The presentation briefly covered the 2022 Florida Senate Bill 4-D on windstorm loss mitigation, requirements for roofs, and opening protection.

The event brings more than 80 technical and professional development sessions in 7 tracks of engineering: structural, geotechnical, environmental & water resources, transportation, utilities, sustainability, and professional development. The conference included exhibits, a technical tour, technical sessions, CEH presentation, exhibitor hall access, and networking opportunities. 

Established in 1926, the organization consists of 13 branches, 18 technical institute chapters and technical groups, 11 student chapters, and over 7,000 members. The Florida Section of the ASCE’s mission is to advance professional knowledge and improve civil engineering practice. ASCE pioneers new programs, policies, educational activities, and professional resources to help engineers successfully compete in their business.
